I'm thinking of posting an Vari-Lite mini-FAQ, as I think this question
comes up kind of often.

Briefly:

Series 100(the one that started it all)

++VL1

Series 200

**VL2 spot - HTI-250 source, 9 templates, more than 120 colors, variable
pan, tilt, intensity, beam size, edge. Single optics. About 58 pounds.

*VL2b spot - HTI-400SE source w/high output reflector, 9 templates, more
than 120 colors including 3200 deg. correction, variable pan, tilt,
intensity, beam size, edge. Dual optics About 58 pounds.

VL2c spot - HTI-600SE source w/high output reflector, 9 templates, more
than 120 colors including 3200 deg. correction, variable pan, tilt,
intensity, beam size, edge. Dual optics. About 58 pounds.

**VL3 wash - Custom 1000watt Quartz source w/high output reflector
and built in electronic dimming. Variable color tuning producing
approx. 1000 color variations, variable pan, tilt, intensity, beam
spot/flood, diffusion. Single stippled front convex lens. About 58
pounds

VL4 wash - HTI-400SE source w/high output reflector, variable color
tuning producing approx. 1000 color variations, variable pan, tilt,
intensity, beam spot/flood, diffusion. High speed douser for
strobing effects or 1/10th of a second blackouts. About 2/3rds the
size of the VL2/VL3 luminaires and about 38 pounds.

VL5 wash - 1000watt Quartz source w/high output cold-mirror
reflector, variable color tuning producing approx. 1000 color
variations, variable pan, tilt, intensity, diffusion. beam
spot/flood altered thru set of 6 interchangeable convex lenses.
External dimming needed. No internal Fan for completely silent
operation. New compact-yoke format allowing units to be placed on
18 inch centers. About 22 pounds.

VL6 spot - MSR400 or MSR700 source(I lost track of which one they decided
on) w/high output cold-mirror reflector, Power supply for globe in
remote rack mount modules allowing unit to operate with only a silent
micro-fan. User configurable color/template mechanism. Variable pan,
tilt, intensity, beam size, edge. Interchangeable short-throw/long
throw optics. New compact-yoke format allowing units to be placed on
18 inch centers. About 22 pounds.

VLM - Front-silvered, double sided mirror mounted in VL5/VL6 compact
yoke. Variable pan, variable and continuous tilt. Focus a source at
it for effects and extremely fast beam movement. About 15 pounds(I
think)

Notes

++ No longer manufactured, but available in small quantities in smaller
markets and some international Vari-Lite offices.

* Available in limited quantities(superceded by another unit).

** Phased out and no longer available.
