DMX512 - The Standard

The original Standard was originally developed and published by USITT in 1990. The Standard is now an ESTA publication, and goes under the title of Entertainment Technology - USITT DMX512-A - Asynchronous Serial Digital Data Transmission Standard for Controlling Lighting Equipment and Accessories. It is also known as E1.11, USITT DMX512-A, or DMX512-A. The Standard may be purchased in PDF from the ANSI Electronic Store

The standard is not available for free, you have to buy it! However it is an indispensible document for anyone seeking to understand how DMX512 works, and does only cost a few dollars.

The history of the standard and why it was updated can be found at DMX512 - Behind the Revision on the USITT site.

Bundled free with the Standard is Recommended Practice for DMX512 by Adam Bennette, a joint plublication of USITT and PLASA. Everyone who installs, builds or designs for DMX512 should have a copy of this, and should spend the time to read it. This book has replaced almost all of my handwritten notes of lessons hard learned with DMX512!
