Few protocols have become some ubiquitous in their chosen field as DMX512. From the starting position of zero compatible devices in 1986, the year of the standard's publication, there are today very few lighting control devices manufactured that are not compatible with DMX512.
DMX512 was originally envisioned as an additional control protocol, to be used alongside existing protocols. Rather than co-exist, it has displaced almost all proprietry protocols, and a good thing too.
